BBC Report About Leslie Howard's Death

[BBC Report of Leslie Howard's Death] On Saturday, July 30, I posted on Facebook the 2014 BBC report on Leslie Howard's Death ...

The Beggar's Opera

The Beggar's Opera by John Gay and Frederic Austin
Lyric TheatreHammersmith
Rôle: Filch
Total Performances: 38
3/11/1929 - 4/13/1929

ref: Wearing, p. 656 • Probably a misprint. P. 127 of Wearing also shows "Leslie Howard" as Stage Director for a production called The Faithful Heart, 11/12/21, which Eforgan includes in her book in the Theatre and Film Work Index. That entry proves that misprints and/or wrong ascriptions can occur in Wearing's book because Howard could not have been in New York and London at the same time. The Beggar's Opera entry is obviously a misprint as Leslie Howard would not have appeared in a musical, especially an opera, in 1929. He was already a successful actor in London and on Broadway. There was an H. Leslie or Howard Leslie and a Leslie Howard Gordon involved in the London theatre at that time. Unfortunately, all the publications which could shed light on the mystery require a subscription.
reviews: Era 3/13/29, 4; Observer 3/17/29, 15; Stage 3/14/29; Times 3/12/29, 14.
