The Faithful Heart* by Monckton Hoffe
Comedy Theatre†, London
Stage Director
Total Performances: 185
11/16/1921 - 3/18/1922
†transferred to Queen's 3/27/1922 - 4/22/1922
*Nicoll, p. 727
ref: Eforgan, p. 56 and Theatre and Film Work Index
ref: Wearing, p. 127 • This entry is most likely a misprint or is for another Leslie Howard. In Nicoll, pp. 782 and 787, a person named Lion and an H. Leslie are cross-referenced in regard to a play the two authored together. Then, in the Wearing listing for The Faithful Heart, p. 127, Leon M. Lion is listed as the producer and Leslie Howard the stage director, a suspicious coincidence. A Leslie Howard is also shown in Wearing as a singer in The Beggar's Opera, 3/11/1929, p. 656, which defies the imagination. I have included it in the Chronology to demonstrate that there is another Leslie Howard, or that Wearing is not infallible. Eforgan did not include that credit in her book. There was a director named H. Leslie involved in the theatre at that time and I believe the name was transposed in the publication. Regarding The Faithful Heart, Howard was obviously in New York during these dates—see the entries before and after this one in the Chronology view. Also, Eforgan only mentions the play in the body of her book as a comment on what was happening in the theatre at that time, not as a play in which Howard appeared. Eforgan also included in her book director's credits for three one-matinée-only performances at the Ambassadors Theatre on 1/27/1921 which Howard could not possibly have directed because Leslie and Ruth Howard did not return to London until the summer of 1921. Unfortunately, all the newspapers and magazines which could shed light on the mystery require a subscription, but it is my belief that this and the other listings in Wearing are misprints or are for another Leslie Howard or for someone named H. Leslie, the name being transposed.
